yoga e-lesson 10: protect your mind
2009-10-18
Ask anyone and likely they will tell you that the world is in deep trouble. Turn on the tv news, surf the net, talk to folks and you will get a belly full of stories about people who are struggling and suffering in a state of lack and deprivation. There is no end to information about the cruelty and injustice of human relations.
When you are hearing about, thinking about, picturing or talking about these problems, your body and mind are negatively affected. The deep part of your mind is immersed in the images and ideas AS IF IT IS HAPPENING TO YOU.
I can't stress this enough: dwelling on, thinking about, talking about other people's misfortune is NO DIFFERENT to your subconscious mind than the "real" events happening to you. Your subconscious processes whatever you think about, listen to, or imagine as if it's REALLY HAPPENING to you.
Ask yourself "How much negative information do I need to be safe here on earth?" "If I am deciding to act and be part of the solution, how much time do I need to spend thinking about the problems I am trying to solve?" Every idstressing thought, picture, impression you absorb takes you deeper into your own inner experience of those problems.
You can be a bigger force for good in the world when you are in a state of high inspiration, joy, health and abundance. You are free to focus on love, sharing, and generosity. You have so many more resources at your disposal when you are in the experience of your own highest good.
In order to maintain a high level of inspiration and abundance, focus your mind only on the beautiful, pure, luxurious and abundant. Turn your senses and thoughts away from the small, mean, painful, or unjust. Be vigilant.
You have the right to control what goes into your mind. Whatever it is, once an impression goes in you will have to process or deal with it.
You know the wisdom of eating good nourishing food. A healthy diet creates physical ease for you. Your mental diet works the same way. Put uplifting ideas into your mind and enjoy being uplifted.
When you go to yoga class, you are taking a definite stand to protect your mind. During your session you get in touch with the experience of peace, wholeness, empowerment, and many other positive states. These make a deep and lasting impression on your mind and body.
These positive states continue to influence your life after your session is over. They will last much longer if you protect your mind by continually feeding it uplifting ideas, experiences, thoughts and speech.
You can arrange your life so that, between going to class and paying attention to your mental diet, you can experience ongoing and deep well-being.
