yoga e-lesson 11:finding deep rest and renewal
2009-10-25
It is necessary to create a special time and place for yourself to get away from the stresses and demands of life and go within yourself. When your attention is engaged with work, friends, family, entertainment, hobbies, and chores, your nerves are being taxed, not rested. Many people have trouble sleeping or don't wake up really refreshed. Sleep alone can't make up for the constant stimulation and strain of daily life. When your nerves are stressed and your energy is unbalanced, your sleep is disturbed and you get more tired and stressed.
Within yourself you have the capacity to create deep inner peace and well-being. But you can't establish this through will power alone. You can't create peace and rest while dealing with the distracting influences of your daily routine and environment.
Get away from your routine, your house, your family and everything else that makes demands on your resources. Then you can still yourself and connect to your center. You may think this is a selfish idea, but really it's the kindest thing you can do for yourself and the people around you.
If you don't frequently unplug your thoughts and actions from other people and your responsibilities you become edgy, unhappy, and difficult to please. This is hard on those who love you. They would prefer you to be happy and easy to be around.
Establish a definite practice, done at a certain time each day or week, in a certain place, in a certain way to unplug yourself from outside influences. This way you use your willpower to successfully create peace, healing and bliss.
What you focus your attention upon becomes your experience. The world outside you is chaotic, demanding. Staying too continuously immersed in your life wears you down. You becomes nervous, tired and disconnected.
Practicing peace and inner quietude brings you back into balance. By going inside yourself in yoga class you will find an oasis of peace you can access at will.
You might doubt that going within yourself will be peaceful. You may already be aware of the multitude of conflicting thoughts, feelings, and desires that populate your inner world. Many people are busy distracting themselves as much as possible from looking within themselves, for fear of what they might find there.
During a yoga class, with the help of one of our teachers, you will be guided past all the mental and emotional clutter; you will definitely be able to create more and more inner peace, well-being and restful healing in your body and mind.
Working with us, you will learn how to go into ultra-deep relaxation at will. You will gain control over your energy so you always have the energy you need, when you need it. You will learn how to put yourself to sleep peacefully and get true rest.
Your quality of life depends upon periods of rest and renewal. Watching television, reading, hobbies may be somewhat relaxing, but they don't really rest your nerves the way yoga does. When you are in our classes, you actually feel your nerves relax and unwind. Your brain relaxes as well as your muscles. That's when you find the inner wellspring of peace and contentment that soothes your soul.
